How do I set up a Text Giving campaign?

This article will guide you through setting up a Text Giving campaign step-by-step.

Table of Contents

Step 1: Activities

Donr Dashboard > Text Giving > Create Activity

When setting up a Text Giving campaign, the first thing to consider is whether this campaign will be part of a wider fundraising push, using other Text Giving campaigns or campaigns set up using Donr's other fundraising solutions. If this is the case, you might like to set up an Activity to group all of your fundraising campaigns under – then, when it comes to reporting, all of your campaigns' donation reports will be grouped together in one Activity.

If you have created a new Activity, you'll be asked which Activity you'd like to assign your new Text Giving campaign to. If you have not created a new Activity, this step will not appear.

If you are not interested in grouping reports together in this way, there is no need to create a new Activity to create a new Text Giving campaign.

For more information on Activities, take a look at our article 'What is an Activity and how do I use one?'.

Click here to return to the Table of Contents.

Step 2: Choose your campaign type

Donr Dashboard > Text Giving > Create Campaign > (Assign to Activity, if a new Activity has been created) > Select from Donation & marketing consent, One-off Donation, Regular Donation or Send supporters to a Giving Page to donate

The campaign you choose will be dependent upon your aims for your Text Giving campaign. Click on each campaign type for set up instructions.

Donation and marketing consent campaigns allow for the collection of one-off donation amounts from £1 to £20 and for the collection of marketing consent from the supporter so that your charity can contact them via phone or text message in future.

One-off Donation campaigns allow for the collection of one-off donation amounts from £1 to £20. These campaigns do not have the ability to collect marketing consent for future contact.

Regular Donation campaigns allow for the collection of monthly donation amounts from £1 to £20. These campaigns do not the ability to collect marketing consent for future contact.

'Giving Page' Text Giving campaigns can be used if you have a Giving Page already set up to 'send supporters to a Giving Page to donate' – they will be sent a link in response to their text message which they can follow to make a donation by card or digital wallet service via your charity's Giving Page.

Once you've decided on your desired campaign type, see the instructions below to complete set-up.

Donation and marketing consent campaign set-up instructions

Creating a ‘Donation & marketing consent’ campaign screen one

Choose a name for your campaign to remind yourself of how you used the campaign. For example, it might be ‘Summer Party 2021’ or ‘General Website Donation Option.’ Enter the name for your campaign in the ‘Campaign name’ field.

Choose a keyword for your campaign, type it into the ‘Keyword’ field and use the drop-down menu to review which shortcode phone numbers your chosen keyword is available on. Open the drop-down menu and review the list of shortcodes; if there are none available (or the keyword is not available on the shortcode you’d like to use), you’ll need to choose a new keyword. Otherwise, select an available shortcode.

Creating a ‘Donation & marketing consent’ campaign screen two

You can customise various aspects of your campaign on this screen.

If your Text Giving campaign is CHARITY on 70085, a supporter can donate any whole pound amount between £1 and £20 by texting CHARITY, followed by their chosen donation amount to 70085 e.g. text CHARITY 3 to 70085 to donate £3 or text CHARITY 17 to 70085 to donate £17.

A default donation amount allows a supporter to make a donation via text without including a number at the end of their message. Let’s say you set the default donation amount at £5 – instead of texting CHARITY 5 to 70085, the supporter would just need to text CHARITY to 70085 to donate £5.

Please note, a supporter can still donate any whole pound amount between £1 and £20 by including the number after the keyword in their text. The default donation amount only comes into play when no donation amount is specified.

Set the default donation amount by changing the amount using the ‘default donation amount’ drop-down menu. If you do not wish to set a default donation amount, choose ‘let the supporter decide’ from the menu. If you do not set a default donation amount, the supporter must specify a donation amount in their text. If they do not include a number between 1 and 20 after the keyword in their message, they will receive a bounce-back message, asking them to text again with a donation amount specified.

Donr can send a follow-up text message to your supporters asking them to make a Gift Aid declaration. The text will include a link which they can tap on their smartphone or type into a computer/tablet internet browser to take them to a declaration page – they input their details, hit ‘submit’ and then that data is available for your organisation to view and download in the Gift Aid section of the Dashboard so you can submit it to HMRC to make a Gift Aid claim. If you’d like this to happen, set the ‘Gift Aid declaration’ field to ‘Yes.’ If you don’t want to collect Gift Aid declarations on this campaign, set this field to ‘No.’

Donr can send a third follow-up text, asking a supporter to convert their one-off donation into a monthly gift of a certain amount. If you’d like us to do this, set the amount you’d like us to ask for from the ‘monthly donation’ drop-down menu. If you don’t want to ask for monthly donations on this campaign, select ‘No’ from the drop-down menu.
