1. How do supporters enter?
A supporter enters a Mobile Lottery by completing a short form. Payment is made by mobile phone and is added to the supporters’ next phone bill, or deducted from phone credit as applicable.
In the form the supporter will be asked the following information:
How many tickets they would like to purchase
-
To confirm they are over 18 years of age and are a resident of England, Scotland or Wales
-
Whether they would like to hear more from the charity
-
First and last name
-
Mobile phone number
You can watch a video walk through of the entry process here!
2. We already have a lottery, why would we use Mobile Lotteries too?
Good question! First things first - having an existing lottery is not a barrier to using the Mobile Lotteries entry flow. But why not just rely on the standard Direct Debit based entry? There are many reasons! The sign-up form for a Mobile Lottery is significantly shorter than a traditional entry form, making it quicker and easier for supporters to enter, preventing drop-off. Supporters have all the information they need to enter the lottery at hand, no need to find card numbers or risk drop-off if the supporter does not have their information to hand. In fact, it is 4 times easier for supporters to enter a Mobile Lottery than a traditional Direct Debit lottery, encouraging many more sign ups. Finally. the easy-to-use flow is accessible to all audiences, compared to Direct Debit entry which younger generations are far less likely to use. Mobile Lotteries can expand your lottery entrants demographics, and increase your revenue! If you already have a lottery but are still interested in what Mobile Lotteries has to offer, you can use the Mobile Lotteries entry flow to process entries into your existing lottery.
3. How much work will it take from our side? How long does it take to get set up?
There are a few very simple steps to get up and running:
-
Register with Donr and complete our verification checks
-
Register with the phone-paid services authority
-
Either have a licence from the Gambling Commission to run an online lottery, or have a small lotteries licence from your local authority and be working with an External Lottery Manager
We will guide you through this process, so you won't be left guessing at what you have to do. Registering with Donr and the phone-paid services authority is very quick to do, and comes through instantly. If you are not yet registered with your local authority, then this application will need to be completed, and has on average a two week turn around. Once your lottery is live, you'll need to promote it to attract players. There are various ways to do this, and we have put together advice on the different and best ways we have found, so there is plenty of support.
So long story short, it can take a couple of weeks, to a month, depending on your needs and the speed you would like to move at!
4. How can we best promote a Mobile Lottery?
If you don’t have any experience with lotteries, we are here to account manage and help you every step of the way. If you do - you can integrate the Mobile Lotteries flow with your existing lottery. There is a solution for everyone! There are many ways you can promote your lottery, including but not limited to the following:
-
Your QR code can be added to printed assets such as banners, posters and flyers
-
Your link can be added to email and social media posts or adverts
-
Your customisable domain can be used for verbal calls-to-action, such as at in-person events or through broadcast media
We suggest using a variety of approaches to promote your lottery. That said, the most successful method of promotion we have found is to use social adverts. These can be particularly successful as audiences can be highly targeted towards individuals who are likely to support your cause and who are interested in playing a lottery. Let’s use Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter as an example - within three months of launch they reached 200 weekly players, which represents more £10,000 of reliable income for the Shelter each year. Further down the article we will discuss how charities can ensure their success!
5. What are the chances of someone winning? Who pays if there is a winner?
A winner is equally likely (or unlikely depending on how you think!) no matter how many players there are in your lottery, or in the Donr lottery as a whole, as the chance of winning a prize is based on number matches. We give prizes for 3 number matches, up to the top prize of £10,000 for a 6 number match. There is a 1 in 69 chance of a supporter winning any prize. In terms of how the prize is supplied, there is a shared prize pot for all charities which is supplied by Donr, which removes any risk of a charity being out-of-pocket when someone wins a prize. These odds are for the Donr Lottery, so if you are integrating your existing lottery with the Mobile Lottery flow, the odds of winning will be the same as for your current lottery.
6. How successful can we expect it to be?
There are many factors that go in to how successful a Mobile Lottery can be. The type and level of promotion that you invest in is crucial in spreading the word far and wide. As with most things, the more you put in, the more you get out!
If you are interested in what charities have done so far to ensure success, check out this webinar we ran with Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter. Beth from NDACS shares with you how the Shelter attracted 200 players in the first 3 months of the lottery, which promotional methods have worked most effectively so far, and how Mobile Lotteries is helping them during the cost-of-living crisis.
7. How do we learn more?
Our favourite question! We have put together a video demo that outlines what Mobile Lotteries are, how they work, how they can benefit your charity, and what the next steps are if you are interested.
